Notre maison

We are in the KL 'suburb' of Damansara. (Sorry, have moved the pin on the map as a search for Kuala Lumpur wouldnt find us - we are 25 mins away from the city center by train or car). Sometimes this is known as Tropicana, if you google Tropicana Golf and Country Resort, that is us.

Our house has 6 bedrooms over 3 levels (the house is 7300 square feet). It has a lift and staircase. The ground floor is our living space, and has 2 kitchens (a wet and a dry kitchen), as well as living and dining rooms overlooking our pool. The kitchen is well equipped (western style) with coffee machines, fan forced oven, large fridge / freezer, dishwasher (unusual for SE Asia) and gas cookers. We also have a filtration unit so all water in the house is safe to drink.

There is also a BBQ by the pool if you prefer to cook outside with the family.

There are 2 master bedrooms, both have a jacuzzi. All bedrooms have an ensuite bathroom and shower. We have converted one bedroom to a gym where we have a treadmill and elliptical walker, as well as TV etc. Another bedroom is a study.

The second and third floors have a master bedroom and two other bedrooms each, as well as a lounge / sitting room.

The main master bedroom has a king bed. There is another king bed in the second master. Another 2 of the bedrooms have single beds for the kids (So as a total, we have 2 King Beds and 2 Single Beds, but there is also room for another bedroom with mattress if required).

As mentioned above, all bedrooms have showers and toilets, with a both masters also having a jacuzzi each. The master ensuites have rain-head showers, and the top floor master has a huge skylight over the jacuzzi.

We have wifi throughout the house, as well as cable TV, Netflix, surround sound etc. We also have a Chromecast if you want to cast your own shows. We have a couple of google homes in the house, if you want to stream internet radio. There is a laundry with washer and dryer.

Our pool is cleaned regularly by our maintenance man, and our housekeeper will clean and do the laundry twice a week.

The area around is very nice. Our gated community has exceptionally good security and very little traffic. We are surrounded by golf courses and forest (yes, there is a troop of monkeys in that forest...)

About 100m from the community gates, there are a set of shops with an international supermarket, as well as good Japanese, Thai and American BBQ restaurants. About 800m in the other direction, is a larger set of shops with a train (MRT) station. The train runs every 5 minutes or so into central, and costs about 6 ringgit. (The station is fairly new and it doesnt yet appear on Google maps)

We would prefer to keep the study closed, but all other rooms are available. Exceptions can always be made if you need access to computing / printing facilities.

A car is negotiable, but you could consider Uber or Grab. An Uber into the city costs about 20 ringgit, or 6 ringgit to go to 1 Utama (the largest mall in Malaysia). A ringgit is about 25 US cents.

Children are welcome, but please note that we have stairs and a pool. The glass doors to the pool can be kept locked if required though.

Here are a few more photos of a house like ours in the same complex (obviously without furniture)

You may see a cat in one of these photos. We have two extremely well travelled cats. Because they are a bit shy, we will give them plenty of toys and close them into one of the bedrooms. However, if you want to let them out and see if they want to play, that's fine as well! If you want, we can arrange for our housekeeper to feed them, although she will of course need daily access to the house to do this. If really necessary, we can put them in a cattery, although that is not our preferred option.

We've just completed our fifth exchange - here is what our first exchange partner kindly wrote...
We arranged a one week simultaneous exchange with Chris and Sam. We arrived by car and met them before they left for Singapore. Their house was very large, modern and in a very nice area of Kuala Lumpur. Plenty of nice shops and restaurants close by. We visited Petronas Twin Towers and Sunway Lagoon water park. After a hot day walking around outside, having a BBQ by their swimming pool was a highlight. We arrived back in Singapore to find our place exactly as we left it. A great one week exchange. Craig, Maria and family.

Apprenez plus sur nous-mêmes

  1. We are non-smokers and have no kids (correlation is not causation though)

  2. Sam was a manager with the New Zealand Symphony (and Queensland Symphony), before being lured to teach music in international schools. Chris is a former lawyer who now enjoys the glamour of being a statistician.

  3. We completed our first exchange with a great family in Singapore, and have just got back from our second exchange (a month in the UK), and that was great as well!

Where is it?

Votre Quartier

Not sure what KL has to offer? Any of these take your fancy?

The Tropicana area is a fairly new area just to the west of KL (about 20 or 30 minutes on the MRT). It's not as built up as KL central, and has many good restaurants and shops, as well as an abundance of golf courses.

There is some really good and cheap Japanese, American (BBQ), Thai and local food within walking distance, as well as cafe's and bars. There is also an international supermarket here.

Some of the other places you may want to explore include

Twin towers - 25 minutes away. also has massive shopping malls
Petaling St / Chinatown - 25 minutes away - excellent street markets and street food
Bukit Bintang - 25 minutes. KL's answer to Orchard Rd, also food street...
Botanic gardens - 20 minutes. Also has bird and butterfly gardens.
Batu caves are about 25 minutes away.

The travel times are "normal" traffic, best to avoid peak hour if possible..

Also, the MRT is brand new, and does not seem to be in Google maps yet (the station is, but the routes are not). The MRT into town takes about 20 minutes, not an hour and a half as google seems to think!

You may want to use this as a base to explore the wider area. Further afield, Malacca is about 2 hours away, Singapore is 4 hours (drive) or so, as is Penang to the North. Bangkok and Chaing Mai are a $100 plane ticket away. There are some really good options closer to KL though, and I recommend somewhere about an hour such as one of these options

Dozens of local restaurants about 1km away, as well as some decent Thai, Korean, Japanese and American BBQ (Beard Brothers)
Our favourite is Yellow Brick Road (about 10 minutes drive), but there are some great options within walking distance
Malaysia is shopping. The world's 7th largest mall is 10 minutes away. If you are here for 20 days, I can recommend 20 different malls
Near Damansara Performing Arts centre. The Malaysian Philharmonic (at the Twin Towers) is very good.
We also have 2 full-suspension 29er mountain bikes if you want to really get a sweat up. The Kota Damansara forest is an easy (and flat) 4km ride, and there are others here http://www.bestsportsdoctors.com/blog/best-mountain-bike-trails-in-malaysia/

Batu caves, Singapore, Penang, Bangkok all within 3 or 4 hours!
