Notre maison

We bought this 18th century house 12 years ago then restaured and expanded it for 3 years. This coral stone house maintains its original swahili architecture , using traditional building materials and plastered tadelakt techniques for all the walls and floors.
Original 3,5m walls are decorated with carved niches , freezes ,alcoves and musharabias .
The 4 levels house with swimming pool have 5 in nsuite double bedrooms suiting up for 12 persons .
But we are spending more time between benches , cushioned sitting areas and the open air top roof terrace enjoying samosas and dawa, the local caipirhina.
All the furnitures are sourced in the island with swahili style antics or new handcrafted pieces by local artisans .
The decoration is inspired by by regional african and islamic cultural elements including maps , arabic caligraphies and local artists works. Ane clectic selection of dvd movies and books offer some intertainments moments duting the quiet Lamu nights.
The construction is taking into account wind circulation in order to capture air breeze cooling . The temperature in Lamu remain between 25 and 30 degrees all the year so a/c is not necessary .
The hous is looked by Mbogo ,our house keeper , who will do his possible to make the as relaxing as possible , collecting you from the airport ,cleaning the rooms and cooking local and basic french food.
