“We are experienced travelers from Russia and Argentina that have travelled around the world intensely for the last 7 years. When the first cases of coronavirus hit we were beginning our travels in India, visiting Taj Mahal, Kajuraho and Varanassi. When some states imposed a lockdown, we decided to seek refugee in the remote Himalayan mountains. We were looking for a quiet place to retreat, totally off the beaten track, where (unlike Rishikesh, Dharamsala, Manali etc.), we could still enjoy the silence of the Himalayas without running into a bunch of tourists. And that is how we ended up at Villa Loshegani, a beautiful house in the Himalayan foothills, where we stayed during the first four months of the lockdown. We instantly felt that we were in Heaven. Location is simply breathtaking - the house is situated on top of a steep hill, surrounded by trees and a wide variety of beautiful flowers spread in the many terraces and levels of the big property. The views of the Himalayan white caps mountain from the outdoor veranda and garden is enchanting! It is so peaceful and quiet all around, perfect for an outside yoga practice and meditation, or simply to watch the villagers working on the fields and terraces down in the valley below. Garden around the house is extremely well kept by the caretakers, the grass lawns are always green and fluffy, different kinds of flowers everywhere you look, attracting many butterflies, birds chirping, and sometimes a family of monkeys would visit, with adorable babies hanging on their moms bellies and young ones jumping around playing joyously, which provided quite some entertainment in times of isolation! There are two beautiful bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and with many windows to enjoy a million dollar view without even needing to get out of bed. Upper bedroom has a terrace that we used to tan and watch the stars at night. Decorated in shabby chique rustic cottage style, with tasteful details and lots of textiles and pillows, every nook and corner of the house is so comfortable and inviting to spend some time with a book from the library albeit small but with good selection to choose from. By night the starry sky is twinkling with constellations of perfect clarity, Milky Way prominent, shooting stars falling behind the hills... on rainy days the thunders and lighting create a show of it’s own, sometimes seen deep in the valley, otherwise completely covered in fog where one can’t see past one’s own nose, with heavy rain falling hard hitting the roof, wood slowly crackling in the fireplace, warming up our hearts and bringing peace to the soul, uniting the elements and hypnotizing our minds... We spent countless nights and evenings like that, or watching old Bollywood films on the flat screen tv in the cozy area of the upper part of the house, singing dancing and crying with the main characters... Even though Mother Nature provides all the entertainment needed day and night we still appreciated super fast Internet for work purposes, YouTube to recreate our favorite Indian cooking recipes and enjoyed some Netflix that normally we never watch. The kitchen is very well equipped, tidy, full of natural light and very spacious, always tempting to create some magic and later enjoy the fruits of our labor at the big wooden table in the dining room or at the outside terrace for brunch; so many times we almost had to pinch ourselves because you truly feel as if in the garden of Eden, with plants meticulously taken care of daily, flowers always in bloom, some ending their cycle for others to take their place with intensity of colors and beauty, spreading sweet nectar and delicious scents to entertain the senses. The living room with a fireplace and TV room complete this neat, well decorated and charming house. Not to forget many outside areas with tables and chairs to enjoy the best views. Vijay, the house owner, was always available to arrange whatever is needed, from dealing with the local police and medical authorities for us to stay safely during the lockdown, or getting us a proof of address for our Visa extensions, to getting a cab to go shopping or to the closest hospital for a check up, and even finding us some chicken and mutton! Manoj, the caretaker, was our savior when it came to getting groceries, drinking water from a well, delicious peaches, apples apricots and plums that he picked from the trees, to fresh herbs and green leafs from the property’s greenhouse. Even though we were confined within the property and unable to explore surrounding trails due to quarantine we felt completely at ease, spending plenty of time outside and enjoying everything this beautiful villa has to offer. Overall a fantastic experience in one of the most serene and peaceful places that we have seen in the world! Villa Loshegani is forever imprinted in our memories and hearts as a perfect nest, the most special place since our first baby was conceived there and we are so very grateful to Vijay and Madam for their hospitality and vision to create this little piece of paradise on Earth. Tucked away in the fruit-growing belt of the Kumaon Hills, in district Nanital, away from the hustle and bustle, lies a dreamy hamlet called Loshegani. It boasts of colorful terraced valley, interspersed with wild oak forests, and a panoramic view of the Himalayas (Oct to March). It is in this paradise, perched on a hilltop, at a vantage of 7000ft above sea, with a 360 degree view of the surrounding hills and valleys, stands Villa Loshegani, a home away from home, crafted to help us unwind, bond with nature.
Spread over 2 acres, Villa Loshegani is set amidst a fruit orchard. The architecture is a blend of the traditional Kumaoni style and American Post & Beam houses. Locally available materials and skills were harnessed to build. Large windows and doors flood the interiors with light and allow a great ‘inside-outside’ feel. Sit outs & sun decks adjoin every room. Spectacular views are guaranteed from almost anywhere in the Villa. The villa is rustic in appeal and comfortable - but not equipped with latest urban amenities.
The housekeeper will be at your service through your stay. He cleans the house daily, makes beds, washes dishes and shops. He can also help a bit in the kitchen. Bed linen and towels are changed once a week. We do not have central heating, but during winter months, we provide oil heaters in all rooms; electric blankets and hot water bottles. A fireplace in the main living room makes for a great way to spend an evening. Wi fi & mobile connectivity is decent, but not optimum for professional usage. Electricity supply can be erratic, but a battery backup makes sure you don’t sit in the dark. Groceries available locally are very basic - suitable for the locals; fresh vegetables and fruits are just about acceptable and meats are best avoided. The kitchen is stocked with staples - Indian and some western and we will arrange some fresh groceries that will see you through a few days. If you have specific/special grocery needs, its best to shop in Delhi and carry them with you. The only local store that that may give you some comfort is some 8 km away - 15 minutes by car; an hour by local / rural transport. Villa Loshegani is definitely not a culinary destination. But with some preparation you can feed yourself well.
New Delhi is about 350 km from here. We recommend you take the Shatabdi Express to Kathgodam leaving daily at 6 am and arriving at 11.40 am. A cab from there to my house is a 2.5 hours drive up hill. The road is mostly serpentine, and for those who have motion sickness, we recommend a tablet of Avomin (Phenothiazine) after a meal but an hour before you start climbing the hills. Tickets for train must be booked way in advance – as Indian trains can be very full. I can help arrange a cab pick up at Kathgodam..
Alternatively, you can hire a cab in Delhi and drive up all the way. This normally takes 9-10 hours, depending on your pit stops. However due to the highway upgrade work currently in works, its a nightmare that can take 13-15 hours instead. So please don't drive up till end 2019 at least. Lastly, you can fly from Delhi to Pantnagar, and further 3 hr. drive by cab to my home. Currently flights are available 4 days a week i.e.: Tue, Wed, Fri & Sat by Air India.
This property is suitable for people who are looking for a rural India experience in the Himalayas. While it’s a comfortable abode, its not for people seeking luxury or even European standard of living. It is not suitable for elderly guests or those with walking disabilities as one has to climb some 100 + steps to reach the villa form the parking. The villa itself is at split/multiple levels.
We also have another property in Goa listed on Lovehomeswap (search for Birdwatchers Paradise, Goa, India)....

FR: Vijay Kumar's reviews
FR: As a host FR: (2)“Staying for a week here was a real highlight of our month in India. The views of the mountains from the house, especially the main bedroom were incredible. It was one of the most amazing places we've ever stayed, and now we are back in the UK we think of it often with very fond memories. We went on a couple of bird watching walks from the house, but mostly spent lots of time sitting on the balcony enjoying the winter sunshine and wandering around the big garden. We had initially planned on a couple of day trips but I found the car journeys on the mountain roads were a bit hair raising, so we decided to just stay at the house, which for us was perfect as we had already been travelling a lot and were happy to have a beautiful base to relax in, but you can easily arrange day trips with the local taxi driver if you are feeling more adventurous. As long as you make sure you arrive fully prepared with everything you need for your stay, you'll be able to relax and enjoy your time there. Excellent detailed communication and advice from our host beforehand was much appreciated. We arrived by a local taxi, arranged via our host, from the Jim Corbett national park, with a stop en route in Nainital to get food & drink supplies. That ended up taking most of a day, as Nainital was very busy with traffic jams and it took us a while to do our food shopping. We bought some takeaway meals which we put in the freezer on arrival so we didn't have to cook too much, but the kitchen was extremely well equipped if you wanted to prepare all of your own food, and the host was generous with allowing us to use staples from their supplies, and also left us a starter pack. The caretaker Manoj was so kind and helpful, kept the kitchen very clean for us, and was able to get hold of basics we ran out of from the little shops down the hill. The house itself is so beautiful. The only reason I have given four instead of five stars for comfort is that I hadn't taken on board how cold it would be inside the main part of the house in the winter months. The downstairs kitchen/living/dining area is stunning but it is open plan with beautiful high ceilings, and we found it was too chilly to linger there for long after eating. It wasn't a big problem as the bedroom was lovely and the TV snug area upstairs had a gas fire where we sat in the evenings, enjoying watching Netflix on the excellent TV. The bedroom was very cosy with electric blankets, fleece blankets, hot water bottles and electric radiators and we slept so well in the very comfortable bed. The ensuite shower room was also well equipped and decorated. It had a fan heater which we used for a little while before having a quick shower. There is limited water available in the area and we were asked to be careful with our usage. There was decent wifi and there's also mobile data coverage, fast enough to use Skype or FaceTime to chat with home. At the end of our stay we left via taxi to Kathgodam and took a very comfortable catered train back to Delhi, which was a very interesting journey. If you love beautiful rural environments and enjoy being off the beaten track, we would wholeheartedly recommend a stay at Villa Loshegani. ”

The immediate vicinity of Villa Loshegani provides excellent opportunities for walks through mountainsides, forests and valleys. But if you want to explore the area beyond walking distance, you will need a taxi. They are difficult to come by - often run down and expensive. So if you'd like to take multiple day trips, then its best to hire a cab for the duration of you stay. I can help you get one. Per day all-inclusive cost with driver will be about $ 50/-. I would recommend keeping a car - gives you a lot of mobility.
On the other hand, if you wish to relax at the villa, go for long walks; just laze, then you are good without a cab.
