Notre maison

If you need a save and cozy place in the center of the city to discover Beijing and make short trips around China, this is the right place to be. In my contract it is written 110 square meters, but in China they count all the balconies (there are three of them) and include the walls into their account. So it actually feels more like 80 square meters. The flat has one bedroom and two workrooms, of which one can be made into a bedroom if necessary. With its parquet floor, steep stairway and several balconies the flat has some kind of mediterranean touch to it. The flat is not perfect (remember - we are still in China), so I can't offer a dishwasher, or an oven. I also regret to say there is no fireplace. But if you want there will be a person coming twice a week to do some kitchen work and clean the flat. if you are a curious person, and want to discover a mostly misjudged part of the world (that is China) you have the perfect base with this flat.

  1. I am a filmmaker and cameraman... I work a lot for German TV, doing news and documentaries. I lived here in China for eight years and studied film writing/directing for four years in a university next to where I live now. My Chinese girlfriend is a novelist and her books have been published in several countries around the world.

Where is it?

Votre Quartier

The flat is situated just on the axis between the forbidden city and the new Olympic stadium (Birds Nest), about five minutes walk to the drum and bell towers. We are still inside the second ring road which was the great city wall before Mao ordered its destruction in the 50ies. The next subway stations would be Gulou, Andingmen or BeiXinQiao. This area is famous for its little alleys that are called the "Hutongs". There will be old Beijingers riding by on their tricycles and shouting out, offering their services to sharpen knifes, or collect paper. Next to my home there is a small shop where the old people of the neigborhood play majiang, smoke cigarettes and discuss the newest incidents evolving around their neighborhood. So be sure you will become part of their conversation. Three years ago this area was just a quiet witness of the past. But the young and hip Chinese discovered it and now a lot of cafes and bars have opened just next to our little alley. So I don't know if I should be happy or sad about that fact. You cant stop it, it is China, and there are some really nice cafes under it. This year they even started to open a couple of boutiques. But still, you only have to walk some meters off this alley and you will find yourself in "Old Beijing". China is the country of food. So be prepared to go out for dinner every evening to discover something new.
