Situated halfway up the East side of Vancouver Island and cradled between the Beaufort mountains and the Straight of Georgia, the Comox Valley is a place of beautiful beaches, fertile farmland, grand forests and crystal clear lakes and rivers. The valley is home to the municipalities of Courtenay, Comox and Cumberland which offer you an abundant range of shops and services. The three Municipalities
and the portion of the Regional District that comprise the Comox
Valley are unique and distinctive from each other. Although the people, businesses and infrastructure are intertwined, each jurisdiction has its own history and cultural make up. The Comox Valley consists of approximately 1700 square km of land. The valley is ranked the 6th overall warmest region in Canada!”
The Comox Valley is the place to be for the cultural eco-alpine enthusiast, featuring stunning views from the mountains that you won't want to miss. Enjoy world class downhill skiing and snowboarding at Mount Washington Alpine Resort (30 mins from our home up the mountain) as well as cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and snow- tubing fun! There are also lots of cultural activities you can enjoy in this pristine natural environment from alpine music concerts to culinary events. Take in the panoramic views of the Comox Valley and mainland Coastal Range of snow-capped rocky mountains, the masses of brilliant alpine wildflowers, and high mountain lakes and glaciers, all from our golf-course community.
Salt and freshwater sport fishing is one of the Valley's biggest attractions and your catch of the day is sure to impress. Well-stocked lakes, countless rivers and protected ocean waters contain salmon, red snapper and halibut, as well as cut-throat trout and steelhead.
Ocean and river kayaking and canoeing are popular pastimes in the Comox Valley. You can bring along your own kayak/canoe and paddling gear or rent it from one of the local outfitters. Most kayak and canoe rental outlets also offer lessons and eco-paddling tours which explore the Comox Valley's natural and cultural history. Paddlers can view seals and sea lions, ocean birds, lush forests, log booms and tugs, occasionally whales and the majestic coastal mountain range.
The Comox Valley is surrounded by wilderness and there are unlimited opportunities for hiking and trail exploration. Hiking trails, awe-inspiring scenery and plenty of wildlife await whether you prefer to walk alongside the ocean, trek into the mountains, or anything in between. Stroll in the shadows of an ancient, old growth rainforest, with a few lonely rays of sunlight filtering through the leafy monoliths overhead.
It’s easy to put a smile on your face with a Comox Valley vacation! Families will find plenty to keep them occupied in the Comox Valley year-round, both indoors and out. In fact there is so much to do here, you may have to stay an extra few days – or start planning another visit.
For those who want to expand their fun, the BC mainland is but a short ferry ride away. The city of Vancouver is one of the most beautiful in the world with the ski town of Whistler just a short drive away. A whole new world of exploring and adventure awaits you on BC’s mainland. We are 5 minutes away from the Comox International Airport (shared with the AirForce Base and boasting the longest runways on all of Vancouver Island) with several large and small aircraft flights a day to connect you to Vancouver, Calgary and the world.
For surfing enthusiasts, the best (some say only) surfing in Canada is on the Wild West Coast of Vancouver Island, approximately a 3 hour drive through old growth rainforests and majestic mountains to Tofino and Pacific Rim National Park, home of Long Beach and surfer heaven, even in winter. This timeframe also boasts world-famous storm-watching with accommodation ranging from quaint huts to 6 Star world-class resorts.
Back at home, the prestigious golf community of Crown Isle offers a platinum rated 18 hole, par 72, championship course playable by golfers of all levels; it boasts incredible glacier/mountain views as well as wildlife within the enormous surrounding trees. The clubhouse is a short 5 minute walk from our home. You are also a short 5 minute drive to the coast with amazing walking trails through old-growth forests, beaches and at many points, 360 degrees of mountains including views across the Straight of Georgia to the mainland snow-capped rockies. The Comox Valley and our home are the perfect combination for an unforgettable exchange to beautiful British Columbia, Canada where you can actually fish, golf and ski all in the same day (if you had time...). While both of us were raised in other parts of Canada thousands of miles away and have no family anywhere nearby, there is a reason we chose to retire here; after living all over the country in the Airforce, we know that this is the best our country has to offer...
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Our dates are very flexible as our home on Vancouver Island is only occupied 2-4 months of the year. Therefore, simultaneous exchanges are not necessary and you could defer your trip to Canada to some point in future years, should you so desire.
Unfortunately, our home is not suitable for children under 16 years of age.
