This is the safest neighborhood in Rio and security is really not an issue here - honestly! Urca is away from the more dangerous areas of Rio ask any local -- but a cool traditional neighborhood at the same time. The apartment block has 24 hour security guards who screen people coming in and out and there is no known crime in this neighborhood.
This is what the Rio Times said about Urca:
"Arguably the safest neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro (due to the presence of a military base and lack of favelas in the bairro), Urca has plenty to offer its residents...The neighborhood has three beaches (Praia da Fora, Praia Vermelha, and Praia de Urca), hundreds of rock climbing routes, and plenty of hiking trails...In the morning and during the day, residents can rent canoes and kayaks to row along the bay, take bike rides along the path to Aterro do Flamengo, or walk with their kids to the local park. In the afternoon and at night, families gather at restaurants and chopperias."
The Apartment is designed by a local artist, and is both quirky with a shower that looks out to the Christ Statue, tastefully decorated, while being a very practical and comfortable living space. Although the apartment is open, it is protected from the elements and it is rare to feel too hot or too cold, in fact it is rare in Rio that the temp. goes below 16 celsius (61 Fahrenheit).
The main dining / sitting room area opens out directly onto the massive balcony which with it's view of 270 degrees spanning from the Christ Statute to the sugarloaf mountain, arguably the best view in Rio from a private apartment!
Copacabana and Leme beaches (beside each other) are a 20-25 minute walk. The apartment is 10 mins walk to the foot of the Sugarloaf and the beautiful Praia Vermelha (the Red Beach), a beautiful small beach at the foot of the sugar loaf. It is 5 mins in a taxi to Copacabana and 12-15 mins to Ipanema. Down-town/Lapa is about 10/15 mins. There are small local bars, juice bars, small supermarket and restaurants within 3 mins walk, they are not tourist places, but frequented by locals, and a more authentic experience of Rio. The large shopping mall Rio Sul is about 6 mins walk, it has nearly everything that you will find in a European or American shopping mall.
there is a new public bike scheme in rio where if you have a cc you can have use of the bikes for about U$6 for the month, although you can only have it for one hour journeys - but you can leave it at a different station, there are lots all over the city. Anyhow I can explain that to you when you're here, cycling is safe in the areas near us and there are lots of cycle path, nice healthy way to see the city. The bikes are bright orange unfortunately and advertise a bank, but you can't have everything I suppose!
Full kitchen, living room with comfy seats and flatscreen TV with cable with international channels (if you can take your stare from the view), dining area that looks out to the 270degree view. One Double room with very strong air conditioning and loads of storage room. Christ statute can be seen from the bed!! Two bathrooms with showers and hot water. Bar. Free fast wifi.
