Notre maison

Our flat is a recently refurbished modern 2-bedroom apartment on the top (2nd) floor of a 1960s solid brick block.

We have wireless internet, a great stereo and a huge CD collection. Because TV in Australia is about as bad as it is where you live, we don't have one. Computers hook up to the stereo, however, if you're desparate for veg-out entertainment and can't be bothered walking downstairs to the cafes or beach.

We have great retro furniture - a black and white vinyl sofa, old lamps and wooden furniture i have hand-crafted myself.

The bathroom is new, with heated towel racks and a washing machine. The kitchen is pretty spacious and has stainless steel gas cooktop and electric oven. Unfortunately we have no dishwasher, but this might change before the end of the year...

Rear access through the kitchen leads to the rubbish bins and washing lines.

Not that you need one, but our car is a 5-speed manual 2-door 4WD. It has all the mod-cons you need to get around.

St kilda has been a holiday destination since Melbourne was first settled. Nowadays it's the travellers' hub. Within five minutes' walk from our place is St Kilda Beach, Luna Park, Acland St & Fitzroy St shops, cafes, bars and nightlife. The #96 and #16 tram are minutes away and take you into the CBD and beyond.

But beware: we live in the non-gentrified part of St Kilda! There are (gasp!) prostitutes that work our street - sometimes in our driveway! The Johns that cruise the street can get annoying, but there's a good police presence which makes the street pretty safe - my wife has never felt threatened walking down the street late at night and visitors from out of town love watching the action from the back door - but it's obviously not everyone's cup of tea.

There is also a meatworks across the road and trucks sometimes park in the middle of the street offloading and loading dead cow and chicken. It's not smelly, but we prefer to buy our meat at the South Melbourne Market down the road.

My wife and i are both professionals. I'm a secondary school teacher; my wife is originally from Germany and works here for a large commercial architecture firm.

Between us we speak English, German and a little Spanish & French.
