Enjoy hatted restaurants, cool climate wines & gold rush/bushranger history of Orange. New home set high on sloping block with large outdoor deck with views that go on forever in the big sky we have out here. Suitable for most travellers, you should consider the height of the back deck 3+m with many stairs, if you have young children. With all the mod-cons of a new home such as ducted reverse cycle air, comfortable couches and beds, gorgeous gardens, it makes for a lovely stay in this leafy, cultural regional city.
Located on the North end of town in a new-ish area, (you can still see cows and sheep from the back deck) within walking distance to the Botanic Gardens, the renowned Adventure playground and a $12-15 cab fare into the CBD for great restaurants, wine bars and country pubs.
The Orange region is home to three SMH 'hatted' restaurants - Lolli Redini in town, Racine a short drive out of town and Tonic in Millthorpe a village about 20 mins away. We have a burgeoning wine industry producing elegant cool-climate wines and around 30+ cellar doors. Each year the region celebrates FOOD week in April and Wine Week in October.
We have regional art gallery of note, a theatre that brings out many metropolitan productions and our cinema runs the latest films. Boutique shopping in the region is a highlight. There is country racetrack just out of town and an indoor heated public aquatic centre. There are three lovely golf courses, historic parks and buildings (Orange was built in the Gold Rush age - a good walking tour is available).
The site of Australia's first payable gold discovery (Ophir Reserve) is about 30km away and a great spot for a picnic. For bushwalkers there are many lovely trails to be discovered around Mt Canobolas - the highest peak between Orange and Mozambique.
At 1000m Orange is cool during summer (tops around 26 degrees Celsius) and cold during winter where it usually snows a couple times during the season. Orange has a typically 'English' climate with four distinct seasons. In spring - the bulbs, flowering trees and rhododendrons delight, summer - the intensity of the green of deciduous trees burns your eyes, Autumn colour is spectacular and winter's austerity is bracing.
