Notre maison

A comfortable family home with indoor/ outdoor living in an oasis in the "Inner West" of Sydney. Recently renovated and painted, this "bungalow" or one storey cottage has one master bedroom, and a second large bedroom with a sunroom play area or "sleep-out", with room for several children possible. The modern kitchen/ living space has 'state of the art' gas cook top and electric oven, dishwasher, large fridge, excellent range of cooking utensils and tools, crockery, cutlery etc, and comfortable sofas and dining area. Hi fi includes turntable, tape player, cd player and radio! Study/library/TV room has a tuned piano and connections for computer setup. The spacious bathroom has shower and bath plus toilet and vanity.
A large leafy flyscreened deck adds another living space to the house. The north westerly aspect of the living/dining/ deck area makes it a sun trap in winter.

My neighbourhood has had a long history of Aboriginal occupation, and, since the time of European settlement, has had various industries related to the working harbour and cottages for the ship builders of Mort's Dock. A peninsula of land jutting out into the famous Sydney Harbour, Balmain has kept its distinctive "village" character and quality of life for those who live here. Quaint and characterful, the cottages attracted artists, bohemians and academics, who moved in when rents were low, to locate close to the universities, warehouses, art studios and other inner city services when the shipbuilding closed down. Balmain has since been gentrified but retains its character.

It is a quiet and picturesque place, which attracts people with fairly progressive political views. There has been a baby boom in the area since the late 90s, making it one of the most child friendly neighbourhoods in Sydney. Walking around Balmain is a visual, historical and social treat, with many chances to meet, greet and picnic in fantastic harbourside parks, playgrounds, markets, tennis courts and swimming pools, as well as cafes, restaurants, pubs with live music and community events.

The house is in a friendly street with established neighbours of 30 years, and it is walking distance to all services and facilities, including the local primary and high schools and only short walks of 5 to 10 minutes to public transport (Buses and ferries).

This house has been home for 17 years, nestled between neighbours from the "bohemian" era, on blocks of land that are unusually large for the area. Home grown vegies and flowers flourish in spite of our hungry pets- two lop-eared rabbits and a gentle, ageing golden retriever. My 11 year old son and I can link you with friendly families in the area, and share some toys with your kids.
