Our lovely holiday home is located at Coles Bay the jewel of the stunning East Coast of Tasmania. Nearby are many magnificent white sandy beaches surrounded by imposing red granite mountains, our world famous beach is much photographed Wineglass Bay. The Freycinet National Park famed for its great natural beauty and scenery has many kilometres of walking tracks and campsites. Great Oyster Bay is a large, mostly sheltered expanse of sea between the Freycinet Peninsula and the Tasmanian mainland and is fantastic for fishing and boating. Many bike riding tracks run through the local bush and the main road is very safe for cycling.
The Freycinet Peninsula juts out from the East Coast of Tasmania and it has a fascinating history. To get here you simply turn off the Tasman Highway onto the Coles Bay Road. The next 28 kms gives you options to stop at Friendly Beaches, Moulting Lagoon, or jump on a scenic flight. You will know when you are close to the township when you see the towering granite mountains of the Hazards Range that protect Coles Bay. There is plenty to do once you get here from sampling world class oysters and seafood, to taking a quad bike or sea kayaking tour into the National Park, cruise around to Wineglass Bay, or relax on a guided tour of the local wineries for an afternoon. Reward yourself after a day of exploring at one of our cafes serving locally roasted coffee or fresh fish and chips. Numerous local restaurants have impressive menus specialising in local sea food, beef and lamb. Tasmania has dozens of vineyards and distilleries producing world class pinots and whiskies.
Flathead are the prime target sea fish in Great Oyster Bay,, as well as seasonal squid and large wrasse. Launch your boat, or hire one or take a charter from one of the six local boat ramps, or try beach and jetty fishing. Jig for squid at dusk or in the evening, or try for small Australian salmon (cockie salmon), long fin pike, mackerel and leatherjackets, which are also caught off these jetties.
Nearby Nine Mile Beach along Dolphin Sands and Friendly Beaches are good spots for beach fishing, but with a surf rod and traditional flathead rig or a 20-30gm silver wobbler, any beach may yield flathead, salmon, pike or tailor. Rock fishing in Great Oyster Bay or at the mouth of the Swan River is likely to result in catches of Australian salmon. The Swan River is also one of Tasmania’s best bream fisheries. Just off Honeymoon Bay (Coles Bay) is another good spot for squid. Try fishing where you can see black squid ink splashed onto the rocks.
Schouten Passage, between the southern end of the Freycinet Peninsula and Schouten Island, is a nutrient-rich, deep-water channel that attracts a range of fish species. Currents can be turbulent, but with a good boat and large sinkers you may catch big flathead, striped and bastard trumpeter and big wrasse. The southern tip and eastern side of Schouten Island are good spots to try for southern bluefin, yellowfin and albacore tuna. Mako and blue sharks may also be taken here.
Our house is set in an easy care garden of native trees and flowering shrubs which attract a wide variety of bird species, wallabies, possums and occasionally echidnas. In fact the wallabies take care of the lawn, keeping it neatly trimmed. Surrounding the house on three sides is a deck which is ideal for enjoying breakfast or drinks. Inside is a spacious lounge and dining area, a large well equipped kitchen, a bathroom, a separate toilet. One bedroom has a double bed, another a queen bed with a single bed and the third bedroom has a single bed and two bunk beds. A wood heater in the lounge can be used for heating. In the lounge is the TV CD player and radio and there is free wifi in Coles Bay.

“Our stay at Coles Bay was absolutely fabulous. We enjoyed long walks on pristine beaches and the proximity to the Freycinet National Park was great for hiking. The house itself was a delightful beach house with everything you'd need for a holiday. Lovely linens too! Thanks Mike for excellent communication and tips for enjoying the area. ”
“This was a very comfortable and easy to live in house, set in beautiful surroundings. We took my aged parents and they also enjoyed their stay very much. We can thoroughly recommend the Wine Glass Bay Cruise, and the easy walk to the lighthouse. It was lovely to have the wood fire heater, and we also enjoyed the wood barbeque. The basket of goodies provided and the lovely flowers made us feel very welcome. Mike and Liz will be staying at our place later this year, and we hope they have as good a time!”
“We had a great time in Mike's home everything you would need for a successful holiday was provided. We also liked the short walk to the near by beach which is a real safe and beautiful beach I din't know before even I have been in this area many times. I recommend this property to anybody who likes a comfort well equipped home in a nice position.”
